Description

The White Hart Inn is an 18th-century building, mainly from the early 19th century, located at the corner of Newbury Street and London Street. It has a large L-shaped structure with a curved facade that features a central entrance facing the junction. The building is two storeys tall, with an attic, and has a total of 23 windows. The older elevation on Newbury Street has a tiled roof and three dormers with cills at eaves level. The north side is lower and includes a wide carriage arch that has been filled in. The painted brick wall has rubbed flat arches on the upper floor, a first-floor band, signs of altered fenestration, and two later ground-floor windows beneath cambered arches. The dormer casements are mostly sash windows.

The curved section along London Street has a slate roof, a projecting eaves fascia, rubbed flat arches, later cambered openings on the ground floor, and sash windows. The centre of the curve features a prominent porch with several stone steps, adorned with a cornice, frieze, inner pilasters, Ionic columns, an architrave, a fanlight, and a half-glazed door. The rear part of the building has ground-floor additions that reveal the 18th-century structure. Above the porch is a balcony with decorative iron railings, a trench window, and a shelf at eaves level supported by carved brackets, topped with a sculptured figure of a hart.
