Description

Preston House is a classical-style house built in 1745, with alterations made in 1962. The north-west side has been modified, featuring a complete 'Georgian' front that extends the building by one bay. The main south-east facade has two storeys and a basement, with a window arrangement of 2.3.2. It has a hipped tile roof with a moulded cornice, which was once topped with a balustraded parapet, and a central pediment. The walls are made of old brickwork in Flemish bond, revealed after the removal of a stucco finish. There are four pilasters with moulded bases, cambered openings, stone cills, and a rusticated stucco basement wall below a moulded plinth. The windows are sashes set in reveals, and the stone doorcase features a blocking course above a Doric pilaster order, accompanied by a flight of widening stone steps. The north-west elevation, added in 1962, has a window arrangement of 2.1.2 and includes a four-column Doric portico beneath a large Venetian staircase window. It also features four stucco pilasters that replicate the originals from the front, which have been removed, along with a cap design. The side elevations originally had five regular windows, but an additional window has been added between the pilasters on the west side. The interior showcases Georgian design elements, incorporating both old and new features.
