Description

The Church of St. Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Herriard. It dates back to the 13th century, with significant restoration work carried out in 1876 by Colston. The chancel and nave are from the early period, specifically Early English, with the chancel and the south wall of the nave largely intact. During the 1876 restoration, a north aisle (and arcade), vestry, west tower, and boiler house were added, and the entire structure was renovated.

The chancel features lancet windows, which are enhanced inside by roll mouldings, and has a Perpendicular east window. The wide chancel arch, which consists of several stages, is primarily from 1876 but includes an outer band of older dog-tooth ornament. The south wall of the nave is supported by flat stone buttresses and contains two lancets and two Perpendicular windows. The north aisle, which has three bays, showcases small coupled lancets and octagonal columns in the arcade.

The tower is constructed in three stages and includes flat corner buttresses, a west window, and a plain stone parapet supported by corbels. The building features a tile roof and walling made of flint with stone dressings, alongside stone pieces integrated into the older sections. Inside, apart from Victorian fittings, part of a Jacobean pew is arranged as a screen for the organ.
