Guppy'S Tewcot Wychwood Cottage

This building consists of three cottages, originally a timber-framed house likely dating from the 16th to early 17th century, with later 19th or early 20th century refacing. The ground floors are of chequer brick, while the first floors are tile-hung on Wychwood, and weatherboarded on Tewcot and Guppy’s. The roof is tiled and hipped, with a red brick stack set back from the rear pitch. A catslide roof is present at the rear, and has been built up in Guppy’s.

The cottages have one, two, and one windows respectively, facing south. They feature transomed three-light windows on the ground floor and sash windows on the first floor, generally without glazing bars. Tewcot has an old wooden boarded door with cover strips; Wychwood has a six-panel door; and Guppy's has a modern porch. A single-storey extension with a plain tile roof and crest tiles is located on the southwest side of Tewcot and formerly served as a cobbler’s shop.

The interior retains significant timber framing from the original 16th or early 17th century house, including posts with approximately three-foot jowls descending to the ground floor, visible in the rear wall of Guppy’s and the front and rear walls of Tewcot. Walls of square timber framing with straight braces along the rear wall are also visible. Timber-framed internal partition walls are present, as are stopped and chamfered ceiling beams. Wychwood features a large inglenook fireplace with a projecting stone chimney breast that extends alongside Guppy’s. An old ledged door is found in Tewcot.
