Description
The Winchelsea War Memorial commemorates the servicemen of the First World War and Second World War. It was designed by an unknown architect. The memorial is constructed from stone and comprises a tapered octagonal shaft decorated with carved flower bosses in relief. At the top of the shaft sits a wheel cross. The shaft stands upon a three-tier octagonal stone base. Inscriptions are carved on seven sides of the top tier, remembering sailors and soldiers and specifically listing the names of Winchelsea men who died. Further inscriptions were added after the Second World War to also remember those who fell in 1939-1945. The inscriptions include the names of 15 individuals, and a dedication to Basil Lees Inderwick, of the Canadian Forces, buried at Winchelsea. A deep, corbelled quatrefoil design on the middle tier creates a seating platform around the monument. The lower tier is shallow and undecorated. The decision to erect the memorial followed a public meeting in January 1919, and it was funded by public subscription, being dedicated in 1920. The memorial is designated at Grade II for its elegant stone design, which reflects its historic setting, and for its significant historical value in demonstrating the impact of world events on the local community.
