Description
The Court Hall and Town Museum is a Grade I listed building located on the north side of High Street in Winchelsea. This structure dates back to the 14th century, with alterations made in the 15th century and beyond. It is two storeys high and features three windows, constructed from stone rubble with a tiled roof. The building has modern obtusely-pointed two-light windows and a stone doorway, along with a blocked doorway at the west end. Above the doorways, there are three niches—two pointed and one square-headed—along with the remains of a cartouche and four corbel brackets. The gable ends are present on both the east and west sides; the west gable has a blocked entrance to the basement, while the east gable features a window that is splayed outwards with three iron grilles and a 13th-century doorway that has been reset. Inside, there is a crown-post from the 15th century. The building has served as the Town Hall since 1557, and the Mayor of Winchelsea continues to be elected there annually. The first floor is currently used as a museum.
