Description

The Retreat is a Grade II listed building located on the north side of High Street in Winchelsea. It consists of two parallel ranges and stands two storeys tall with an attic, featuring three windows and one dormer. The front range dates back to the 15th century and is a timber-framed structure now faced with stone rubble on the ground floor, complemented by red brick window dressings and quoins. Above, the building is tile-hung with alternating courses of square and curved tiles, topped with a wooden parapet and a hipped tiled roof. The windows are casement style with small square leaded panes.

The entrance features an 18th-century doorway with a flat hood supported by brackets, and the door itself consists of six moulded and fielded panels, with the top two panels cut away and glazed. The west wall is constructed of red brick with alternating grey headers and includes a medieval round-headed stone doorway. Inside, there is a king-post roof, and beneath the house lies a vaulted cellar dating from around 1300. The back range is of a later date and has modern additions at the rear.
