Description

Mariteau House is a late 18th-century mansion, now divided into five flats. It is located on German Street, Winchelsea. The house is three storeys high and originally had five windows. The front is stuccoed; the ground floor is rusticated with a string course above it. Another string course sits above the first floor. A cornice and parapet top the facade, with a flat pediment over the three central window bays, each flanked by Ionic pilasters rising through the first and second floors. Windows have moulded surrounds with architraves over those on the first floor, though the original glazing bars are missing. The original central doorway has been replaced by two modern, round-headed doorways. A central window on the first and second floor has been divided into two by a partition following the house's conversion into flats. To the north, a recessed addition, now number 5, has two storeys and two windows, constructed from red brick and stone rubble with a string course and parapet. A ground-floor addition at the south end is now part of number 1.
