Description

Martello Tower No 55 is one of a series of circular towers built in 1806 for defense during an invasion scare. The walls are made of brick, measuring 5½ to 6 feet thick, and are covered with a layer of cement. The original doorway was located 20 feet above the ground. The tower features a flat roof that was intended for a gun emplacement. This roof has been modified and expanded for defense purposes during the Second World War. Inside, the tower includes a magazine and two additional floors above it.
