Description

The Martello Tower, numbered 28, is a circular tower built for defense during the invasion scare of 1806. Its walls are made of brick, measuring 5½ to 6 feet thick, and are covered with a coating of cement, which is now peeling off. The tower features a cement eaves cornice, and the roof has a flat center with a sloping edge. The doorway is located about 20 feet above the ground. Inside, the tower originally housed a magazine with two floors above it. The tower is surrounded by a circular red brick wall that is backed with an earth vallum.
