Description
Camber Castle is a historic structure located in a field, accessible via a footpath from Sea Road in Winchelsea. Built in 1538 as part of the coastal defenses commissioned by Henry VIII, the castle features a quatrefoil-shaped plan with lunettes at each corner. The entrance is on the north side, forming another lunette, resembling the stalk of a flower. The building is squat and constructed of ashlar stone, lined with brick. At the center, there is a higher round tower or keep, which is of earlier construction and made of ashlar, with brick lining added to the top or second storey, likely as an addition. Camber Castle is also designated as a scheduled Ancient Monument.
