Description

This building comprises a group of houses, originally three separate properties, which now form part of the Hope Anchor Hotel. Number 16 dates back to the 15th century but was refaced in the 18th century. Former number 17 was built around 1830, and the main block of the Hope Anchor Hotel originates from the early 17th century, also refaced in the 18th century and subsequently altered in modern times. The buildings are two storeys plus an attic, and have either one window and one dormer each (numbers 16 and former 17), or two windows and one dormer (the end house). The roofs are tiled. Number 16 has been refronted with a cement rendering grooved to imitate masonry, with a two-storey bay extension where the original glazing bars are missing. A trellised wooden porch with a pointed canopy and a cap is located at the front of number 16. Former number 17 is constructed of painted brick, with a ground-floor bay and a flat hood over the door. The end house is built of red brick with grey headers on the ground floor, and has tiles above, with a moulded wooden cornice creating a slight angle to the lower edge of the tiles. The end house retains its original glazing bars. The buildings are located as part of a group with Nos 6 to 16, The Studio Chambers.
