Description
The Stables Theatre is a notable early 18th-century stable building with an H-shaped plan. It is constructed of brick, featuring a pattern of red and grey, and has brick pilasters on the wings. The roof is tiled with hipped gables on the wings and includes a moulded wood cornice. The building has seven windows, with two window wings, and the central section has three windows that are slightly advanced. The windows are wood mullion transom types with missing leaded panes and are topped with segmental brick arches. There is a brick string course at the first-floor level. The structure is two storeys high and has boarded over carriageways at each end, also featuring segmental brick arches. Originally used as stables and mews for Old Hastings House, it was possibly built as a dwelling house in the late 17th century before being converted for theatre use. All the listed buildings on the High Street up to and including No. 118 form a group.
