Description

The Mount consists of numbers 1 to 6, a group of three similar semi-detached pairs of houses dating from around 1870 and attributed to Decimus Burton. The houses are stuccoed with slate hipped roofs featuring wide, bracketed eaves. They are three storeys high with a semi-basement. Each pair is four windows wide, with the central two windows slightly projected and featuring ground floor canted bays. The first floor has three-light windows with a cambered cornice above the centre light, while the second floor has three round-headed, pilastered doorways to the left and right, with one window on each floor above, all within moulded architraves. All windows are sash windows without glazing bars. Stuccoed chimneys are topped with cornices. Numbers 2 and 5 have later porches, number 3 has a later second-floor balcony, and number 5 displays a plaque commemorating Herbert Spencer, the philosopher and biologist, who lived there. Numbers 1 to 6, along with Mount Lodge, form a group.
