Description

Archery Villas, dating circa 1850-60, is a row of five attached houses, now combined into a single building, located in St Leonards-on-Sea, and appearing as part of both Archery Road and Quarry Hill. The building is attributed to Decimus Burton. It is stuccoed with slate hipped roofs and wide eaves. The two central blocks are five and six bays wide respectively, with two storeys and a basement. These blocks feature sash windows, some with glazing bars, and moulded architraves. Ground floor windows have side lights and cornices supported by console brackets. Pilastered doorways are present on each elevation. A porch with pilasters supporting an entablature with a balustrade and inset round arch sits off-centre. Gabled dormers are also present. The left and right-hand blocks project and are taller, with bracketed eaves, quoins, tall ground floor windows topped with pediments on consoles, and a continuous cornice. These windows are sashes without glazing bars, in moulded architraves, with continuous cills, and are three and four bays wide. The left-hand block is connected by a two-bay lower range. The basement is protected by railings with spearheads. A further block, set back on the north-east corner, appears almost detached and features two-light round-headed windows with cornices on consoles to the first floor and single-light windows with cornices on consoles to the ground floor. This block has a porch with square columns supporting an entablature and a projecting corner with its own hipped roof. The rear elevation, along Quarry Hill, displays eight bays with sash windows in moulded architraves, pilasters, an entablature and a balustrade above.
