Description
The Gate House is a 15th-century timber-framed building that served as the gate house for the medieval Manor of Ratton, which has since been demolished. It is the only surviving structure from before the 19th century in an area where all other farm buildings have been converted into modern houses. The Gate House is two stories tall with a front that has been plastered and white-washed. The first floor overhangs, and there is a large projecting stone chimney breast with a brick top that rises above the roof level. One ground floor window projects slightly on brackets, while the other windows are modern casements. The entrance features a contemporary double wooden door with a modern lintel and original curved brackets that form an arch above the door. An original iron knocker is present on the door, along with a small aperture or spy hole. The building is now surrounded by new housing.
