Description

The K6 telephone kiosk was designed in 1935 by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to mark King George V's Silver Jubilee. It is a standardised design constructed from cast iron, painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are positioned on the top panels, and rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" are located beneath the shallow-curved roof. Modernised internal equipment was previously present but has since been removed, likely due to vandalism. The kiosk is in fair condition.

The Kiosk forms a notable visual grouping within a cluster of listed buildings: the Old Post Office, Pelham Cottage, F.G. French (the Crystal Shop and Miria), Sea View, and Malthouse Cottage. These buildings are situated around a square, with the kiosk at the centre, creating a close visual relationship.

The K6 telephone kiosk represents an important 20th-century industrial design, developed from Scott's earlier K2 design of 1924, which had Neo-classical inspiration. The K6 was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Giles Gilbert Scott was a significant British architect, responsible for commissions including Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station. Over 10,000 K6 kiosks were manufactured, with many subsequently replaced in the 1960s, though many remain as iconic features on British streetscapes.
