Description
The footbridge immediately south of Wokingham Station is a railway footbridge built around the late 19th century by the South Eastern Railway. It is constructed from iron and made from recycled rails. The design features a braced bowstring supported on piers, which are also made from vertically set curved rails. The arch of the bowstring girder extends down to the ground at both ends and supports the steps, which divide at the west end. The bridge is additionally braced with angle-iron and has expanded metal infilling the parapets. The Wokingham line, which connects Reading to Redhill, was opened in 1849 and became part of the South Eastern Railway in 1852. This bridge likely dates from later in the century, as public safety measures rendered the old worn rails obsolete.
