Description
W.A.D.E. Day Centre is a large house that now serves as a day centre for the elderly. It dates from the late 16th century and has been altered in the 18th century, extended in the 19th century, and further altered and extended in the late 20th century. The building features a combination of timber framing with brick infill, brickwork, and painted render, topped with irregular old tile gabled roofs. Originally L-shaped, it has become irregular in shape with a double gabled front that is positioned at right angles to the road. The structure has parts that are one storey and parts that are two storeys with attics. There is one chimney on the west side with three grouped shafts and clay pots, and another chimney on the east side that breaks the eaves.
On the west front, there are two gables, with the left one being larger. The timber frame is exposed on both gables, although much of the left side has been replaced. Each gable features a tripartite window with glazing bars at the first floor, with casements in between. The right-hand gable has two sash windows with glazing bars and architrave frames at the ground floor, along with French casements to the left. The left side includes a rendered and painted 19th-century extension with a gable facing the road.
The east front is irregular and gabled, featuring sash windows with glazing bars and a 20th-century projecting gabled closed entrance porch, positioned roughly in the centre. Inside, there is a late 16th-century framed newel stair with six flights, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, square newels, and a dentilled string, along with a panelled dado.
