Description
The School is a building located on Hyde End Road in Shinfield, dated 1707, with extensions from the 19th century and alterations in the 20th century. It was built by Richard Piggott, who was the Master Cutler of London. The structure is made of brick and features tiled roofs that are hipped, gabled, and coped, with varying heights and an irregular plan.
The road front includes an 18th-century section in the center, which has a brick plinth, a first-floor string course, and a moulded, modillioned wooden cornice, with flanking chimneys on either side of the hipped roof. There are two hipped dormers that contain 2-light leaded casements. The front has four bays of 4-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights, along with a central half-glazed double door set in an early 19th-century door case featuring reeded pilasters and a small reeded cornice. Above the door is a stone panel with an inscription and the date.
On either side of the central part are two 19th-century additions. To the left, there is a hall built of brick with stone dressings, which includes three stone cross windows with leaded lights and one 6-light window. A stone panel with an inscription and the date 1889 is located between the first and second windows on the left. To the right, there is a brick and stone gable with a string course, which features two wooden cross windows with leaded lights, a clock in the gable, and an arched bellcote above with a pedimented top that houses three bells. Between the string course and the clock, there is a stone panel with an inscription and the date 1860. Further to the right is a single-storey classroom that has three bays of 2-light windows with stone mullions and dressings, also featuring leaded lights.
