Description

The Old Cottage is an early 15th-century hall house that has undergone alterations. It is timber-framed with painted brick infilling and an old tile roof. A chimney was inserted in the 17th century, and a further chimney was added to the east end. The north front features a gable to the left side and a bay of four-light leaded windows. To the right of the gable is an irregular bay of three-light leaded casements, alongside a small 20th-century single-light window, and coupled three-light leaded upper casements above a three-light window on the ground floor. A 20th-century door is located in the right-hand corner. A large 20th-century extension has been added to the rear, and a smaller gabled extension, built in painted brick, is situated to the east. Inside, much of the timber frame is visible, including large roof purlins and wind braces showing heavy sooting. A large scissor brace truss is present in the roof. A ground floor room on the right contains carved heads and a carved panel, reportedly from the former Bishops Palace.
