Description
The Clocktower, built in 1897 by E.J. Shrewsbury, is a Grade II listed structure located at Station Approach. It is constructed of brick with Bath stone dressings and has a square plan with square projections at each corner. The tower features a stone crenellated parapet and stone "pepper pots" on each corner, topped by a timber-framed cupola that houses a bell, which is capped with an octagonal copper domed roof and an ornate iron finial.
Below the parapet, there is a cornice adorned with mythical beasts at each corner. The clock face is set in a stone surround, flanked by quatrefoil ornamentation, and gothic stone arcading is positioned below it, with a stone string course above a single lancet window that has a shallow cusped head.
The base of the tower includes a stone plinth and a two-centred arched opening beneath an ogee drip mould, with tracery in the spandrels. One side features an entrance door, while another side has a drinking fountain, one window, and a commemorative stone plaque celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
