Description

Hadleigh House, located at No 19 Sheet Street, is a late 18th-century building that stands three storeys high, with an attic and basement. It features dark red brick on a projecting basement, and there is a three-course band above the second-floor windows topped with a single course of stone. The building has a plain parapet with stone coping and a mansard roof covered in small slates, flanked by chimneys.

The attic includes three dormer windows with architrave frames and small cornices. The second floor has five square windows, while the first floor also has five windows, with the first, third, and fifth windows on these floors featuring a pair of Venetian shutters. On the ground floor, there are four windows with plain scalloped blind cases, and a central six-panelled door topped by a rectangular fanlight that has a concentric, radiating, and wreathed glazing pattern, enhanced with cast lead ornament. The doorcase is framed by a plain outer surround with an entablature, engaged Ionic columns, an entablature with a modillioned cornice, and a pediment. Access is provided by eight stone steps with plain wrought iron handrails.

The house is set back from the road and is enclosed by a brick wall with a central gateway that features brick piers, stone capping, and contemporary wrought iron lamp holders. The wrought iron gate is referenced by Strakie Gardner in "English Ironwork of the XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries." To the right, there is a two-storey wing made of brick, which has a parapet with stone coping, two windows on the first floor, and one window on the ground floor.

Inside, the house retains many original features, including an open string staircase, cornices, doorcases, dado panelling, and fireplaces. Hadleigh House and No 17 are designed as a group.
