Description
No. 56 Thames Street is a building dating from around 1820 to 1840, situated on an important corner site by the riverside. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of painted brick, featuring a brick dentil eaves cornice and a hipped slate roof. The road-facing side has five windows with glazing bar sashes set within stucco architrave surrounds. There is a central door with three panels and a rectangular fanlight, along with a secondary door to the right, both located on the first floor and accessed by a double flight of steps from the street, which meet at the bottom and are bordered by plain cast iron rails. The river-facing side has two windows, with French casements on the first floor that open onto an ornate cast iron verandah balcony, dating from around 1850, which has a swept roof. Nos. 56 to 58, along with Nos. 61 and 62, form a cohesive group.
