Description
The former Swan Public House, located at 49 Thames Street, dates back to the 16th century or possibly earlier, although it was refronted in the early 19th century. The building has two storeys and features a stucco-faced street elevation with a parapet. On the first floor, there are two windows that have flush framed glazing bar sashes, with the left window being a tripartite design. The ground floor includes a small public house front with a shallow canted bay window, flanked by flush panelled and glazed doors, all set within a frame of pilaster strips that have console bracket heads and a projecting fascia.
To the right, a carriageway reveals a timber frame structure with brick nogging and a massive wall post. The rear wing, which is one and two storeys high, is also timber framed and features a massive wall post and casement windows. The building is topped with old tile roofs. Nos 49 to 51 form a group with Sir Christopher Wren's House.
