Description

Old Cottage, located 45 metres south of the Church of St John the Baptist, is a hall house that has been converted to office storage. It dates back to around 1400 and has been altered in the 18th and 20th centuries. The structure is partly made of brick and features a timber frame with brick and some rendered infill. It has an old tiled gabled roof and originally had a rectangular plan with two framed bays, but now has a T-plan with an extension on the south side. The building is two storeys high and has two chimneys with clay pots that project from the outside walls.

On the north front, there is a late 18th-century diamond leaded two-light casement window on the first floor and an early 20th-century two-light leaded window on the ground floor, both located on the left side. The timber frame is exposed on the first floor, showcasing long tension braces, while the ground floor is underbuilt in brick. To the right of the windows is a projecting chimney with a large, weathered base, and to the left of the chimney is a small lean-to projection with a small window.

The west front features a brick gable with the timber frame exposed, and it has diamond leaded casement windows: a three-light window on the first floor and two smaller two-light windows on the ground floor. Inside, the cottage has principal beams and joists that are chamfered and have run-out stops. The roof structure includes redundant crown post roof trusses, with a collar purlin and clasped side purlins. The middle truss features an arch-braced and chamfered collar with curved windbraces. There are mid-20th-century extensions on the west and south sides that are of similar style but are considered to have no special interest.
