Description

The Hart and Garter Hotel is a Grade II listed building located on the west side of High Street, built in 1890 by R. Robson. This large red brick hotel stands five stories tall and features an octagonal corner turret, reflecting a style reminiscent of London architecture, particularly similar to that found on Gloucester Road and Harrington Road.

The main block has seven windows, with the outer pairs flanked by pilasters. The fourth floor is designed as a deep attic storey, topped with a parapet that includes ball finials and is swept over the outer bays. The windows are set in arched recesses, adorned with pediments and swags. The front of the building extends towards the corner turret at a slight angle, featuring closely set windows and balconies on the first and second floors.

On the ground floor, broad windows are separated by pilasters, and the doorway is framed by paired Pompeian Doric columns with an entablature. The corner turret is decorated with carved brick and terracotta swags at the parapet. The return front facing the station approach mirrors this design, with the end bay breaking out with quoin pilasters and a segmental parapet that includes carved terracotta ornamentation.
