Description

The Former King Edward VII Hospital, Old Windsor Unit, originally known as the Windsor Union Workhouse, is a building from 1835 designed by Scott and Moffatt. It served as a workhouse and later as a hospital for elderly people, and it was vacant at the time of inspection. The structure is made of red brick featuring diamond patterns of blue headers, with yellow brick quoins and window dressings. It has a high-pitched slate roof and is designed in a Tudor style, following a symmetrical U-plan.

The exterior consists of a main block with two storeys and a three-storey centerpiece, connected by a one-storey section to lower one-storey wings. The main section has six chimneys, while the left wing has two chimneys and the right wing has four, all featuring diamond shafts on square bases. There is a stone-coped red brick plinth.

The windows are two- and three-light leaded, with mullions and transoms, set in canted reveals with square heads. The centerpiece includes two-storey canted bays with stone-coped, embattled parapets on either side of a central door that has a Tudor arch and a square hoodmould. The projecting porch also has a similar parapet and stone cornice. At the center, there is a tall cupola topped with a lead ogee cap, a weather vane, and a clock at the base.

The interior was not inspected.
