Description

The Fox and Castle Public House is a hall house that dates back to the late 15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th and mid to late 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with painted render infill panels, some painted brick, and areas underbuilt in painted brick, along with some false timberwork. The building has an old tile gabled roof and is arranged in an L-plan with two framed bays and a cross wing of one framed bay.

The exterior consists of two storeys and one storey, with one chimney on the gable facing the road and a large chimney on the rear roof slope, both topped with clay pots. The windows are 19th and 20th century, featuring 2-and 3-light casements. The entrance front, which faces southwest, is irregular. The gable on the left displays false timbers and has a 2-light window on each floor, with a 20th-century door to the right and a chimney in the centre. The main section has two 3-light windows on the first floor, and a 20th-century enclosed entrance porch with a hipped roof and a part-glazed door to the right. There is also a hipped roof extension on the right, featuring false timbers on the upper level and a 2-light window below.

Inside, there is a large inglenook chimney that has been much altered. Some timber framing is exposed on the ground floor, showcasing chamfered beams, though many timbers have been added. The first floor reveals good quality framing with large jowled posts, tie beams, and wall plates, along with a queen post roof.
