Description

Forest Lodge is a large house built in the early 19th century and altered in the 20th century. It features red brick in Flemish bond and has an original slate roof behind a parapet over part of the building, with a later hipped tile roof covering the remainder. The house has a square plan with a central section and a wing on either side.

The exterior consists of three storeys with cellars and two storeys in the wings. There is one chimney on each wing and end chimneys on the central section, all topped with clay pots. A stucco band runs along the first floor sills of the central section and the centres of the wings, complemented by a deep eaves cornice and a parapet on the right-hand wing. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set under gauged brick arches.

The south-west entrance front has nine bays, with a slightly projecting three-bay central section and two-storey side wings. Four stucco pilasters, resting on the first floor sill band, support the corniced eaves of the central section. Three recessed sections between the pilasters contain first and second floor windows with moulded stucco architraves. On either side of the central door and in the slightly projecting centre bays of the side wings, there are Venetian windows in round arched recesses, featuring pilaster mullions with fluting and paterae at the top.

The entrance features a double door with a glazed upper half and side lights, framed by four similar pilasters. Above the door is a frieze with fluting and paterae under a dentil cornice, and a wide radial fanlight in a round arch with a moulded reveal.

Inside, the entrance hall boasts a barrel vaulted ceiling with moulded ribs and six-panelled raised and fielded doors. An arched opening with pilasters leads into the drawing room.
