Description
A large house, dating to the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century and the late 20th century, and an extension added in the early 19th century. The older part of the house has a timber frame that is now encased in brick, with an old tile gabled roof. It comprises a two-framed bay central section and a two-framed bay crosswing at each end. The house has two storeys and attics. A brick string course runs along the first floor. The front features three bays, with a projecting gable on each end, having moulded and offset brick verges. It has three-light leaded casement windows with rendered mullions and dressings originally made of moulded brick. There are hood moulds over the ground-floor and first-floor windows. A 20th-century enclosed gabled porch provides the entrance, featuring false timbers and a plank door. The rear elevation is similar, but irregular, with gables flush with the central section. An extension adjoins the older part, featuring a two-storey link, built of brick with a hipped slate roof. It has a rectangular plan. A pair of chimneys have offset heads and clay pots, two rendered. Wide wooden eaves include paired shaped brackets. The windows are sash windows, mostly with glazing bars. The south front has a symmetrical arrangement of three bays, with the centre section recessed. A rendered square bay window has been added on the ground floor to the left, with fluted Ionic pilasters, a dentilled and moulded cornice, and a plain parapet. In the centre section are 20th-century French casement doors, with a semi-circular overlight featuring radiating bars. A 20th-century conservatory is situated in front of the centre and right-hand bays, and is fully glazed with a half-hipped roof and brick plinth. The west front is symmetrical with three bays; the centre one projects. The ground floor has three French casements overlooking the garden, with semi-circular fanlights featuring radiating glazing bars. The centre bay has fluted pilasters and a flat hood resting on shaped brackets. The two outer bays have Corinthian pilasters and segmental pediments.
