Description
Dreweatts Bridge and Lock is an accommodation bridge with an integral lock, built in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It follows the standard design by engineer John Rennie. The bridge is constructed of brick and features a single elliptical arch, a band, a solid parapet, and piers, all topped with brick, stone, and cement coping. To the west, the lock has brick walls and a brick chamber with brick and stone coping. The gate recesses are framed with stone quoins. There are two sets of double wooden gates; the top gates use mechanical ground paddle gearing, while the bottom gates are operated with hydraulic gate paddle gearing. Additionally, there are two early 20th-century Great Western Railway weight restriction signs, one located at the northeast corner and the other at the southwest corner of the bridge. These signs are made of cast iron, shaped like lozenges, with raised lettering and mounted on iron stanchions. The Kennet & Avon Canal, for which this bridge and lock were built, was constructed between 1794 and 1810, with John Rennie serving as the principal engineer.
