Description
The Grotto is a house that has been converted into a college. It was built in the late 18th century, with 19th-century additions at the rear. The exterior features white painted brick with a plinth and plat bands. The building has hipped slate roofs with coped parapets, lower roofs over the flanking wings, a truncated end stack on the left, a truncated ridge stack off-centre to the right, and a stack at the rear.
The central block consists of three storeys and three bays, with lower projecting wings on either side that are also three storeys tall and have two bays each. The central block has glazing bar sash windows with exposed wooden boxes, although the ground floor glazing bars have been removed. There is a 19th-century four-panelled door with an overlight located at the far left.
The left wing features glazing bar sash windows, with two on the second floor and one on the left side of the first and ground floors. There is also a glazing bar sash window on the ground and first floors of the quadrant. The right wing has a blank window on the left side of the first and second floors, and a blank window on the right side of the ground floor. To the left, there is a half-glazed door with a doorcase that has panelled reveals, supported by attached Ionic columns and topped with an open triangular pediment that features an eagle in the tympanum.
Inside, there is an octagonal inner hall with niches and delicate plasterwork, as well as 18th-century fireplaces in the ground floor rooms.
