Description
26 The Broadway is a building dating from around 1734. It was developed in a similar style to No 23 by John Carey and became part of the Bear Inn. The building has three storeys and two windows, featuring a double-pile plan with a hipped and gabled tile roof at the rear. It has tall brick stacks with moulded caps and is constructed of multi-coloured stock brick. A brick dentil cornice and parapet return at the west end, while a moulded string at the second floor level breaks forward over the first floor windows. The flush framed sash windows, which have exposed boxing and glazing bars, are topped with gauged flat red brick arches. The ground floor has a modern restaurant front. After the Bear Inn closed (before 1768), No 26 became part of Gales Speenhamland Brewery and from 1802 to around 1930, it was part of the Brewers House of Adnam's Brewery.
