Description
Number 4 on Oxford Street is a building dating from the mid-18th century, which was once part of the Bear Inn, the main inn in Speenhamland until its closure shortly before 1768. The building was remodeled in the early to mid-19th century. Originally, it was a three-storey structure with two windows, but it was extended by two bays at the east end over a carriageway and had its roof replaced. It features a hipped slate roof with projecting eaves and, at the rear, five hipped tiled gables. The exterior is made of red brick with a dentil eaves cornice and a plain band at the second floor level. The ground floor is covered in 19th-century rusticated stucco, with a plain band at the first floor level. The windows have gauged flat red brick arches and are fitted with flush framed sash windows that have exposed boxing; the windows in the second bay at the far east are blocked. The 19th-century doorway has pilasters and a cornice supported by console brackets, along with a rectangular fanlight and a half-glazed door. There is a segmental arched carriage entrance at the east end. At the rear, there is an 18th-century block featuring a large staircase sash window with glazing bars. Additionally, there is a late 18th-century service range and stables, which are two storeys high, made of brick with a tiled roof, and mostly have 19th-century windows and a doorway.
