Description
The Church of St. Mary is a 13th-century church with 19th-century restoration. It is constructed of random flint with Bath stone dressings, with a tile-hung east gable to the nave and a brick east gable to the chancel. The tower is boarded, and the south porch is timber-framed with brick infill. The roofs are tiled, with a pyramidal roof to the tower surmounted by a weathervane. The church comprises a chancel, nave, north aisle, west tower, and south porch.
The west elevation features a truncated gable from which the tower rises, with the north aisle roof lowered. A central square-headed window has three cusped lights and a drip mould. Above a blocked doorway is a four-centered arched head incorporating carved stones that appear to be cusped window heads.
The south elevation of the nave has a plain two-light window and a square-headed window with three cusped lights under a drip mould. The chancel has a blocked square window to the left of the door with a pointed arched opening, and two lancets to the right.
The interior has plastered walls with stone dressings. The nave has a five-bay timber roof of the 15th century, with double butt purlins and curved wind braces. A large timber frame rises from the west end of the nave to support the bell tower. A three-bay arcade to the north aisle contains depressed two-centred arches on a squat pillar to the west and a column to the east. The soffit of the eastern arch retains some remains of painting. A blocked window of one light with a cusped head and label mould is located at the east end of the north aisle. The chancel arch is chamfered and moulded with a two-centred arch and carved springing. The chancel has a two-bay early 17th-century roof with arch-braced collar trusses, clasped purlins, and carved wind braces above and below the purlins. The wainscoted sanctuary contains a stone piscina in a chamfered arch. Fittings include a painted timber reredos and altar frontal depicting a pelican with vine and angels, and Mary and Elizabeth with vine, angels, and scutcheons of arms, designed by Sir Ninian Comper in 1936. A painted panel with the arms of William and Mary, dated 1694, is located on the spandrel of the arch to the north aisle arcade. A cylindrical stone font with round arched arcading stands near the south door. Glass in the east window was designed by Sir Ninian Comper in 1938.
