Description
St Nicolas House is an early to mid-18th century town house, designed in the style of James Clarke of Newbury, with a mid-18th century extension at the rear built before 1768. An additional early 19th century section is located on the south side, and there is a mid-19th century range to the west, known as No 4. The early 18th century stable range to the south was once separate but is now part of the outbuildings of No 3. The house is two storeys high and double-fronted with five windows. It features a tiled roof and is constructed from blue-grey bricks with red brick dressings. The facade includes pilaster strips on the quoins that support a dentil brick cornice, a parapet with pilaster strips, and blind arched panels. The first floor has gauged, semi-elliptical arched, flush framed sash windows with exposed boxing, glazing bars, and brick aprons. The entrance boasts a good doorcase with an open pedimented hood supported by consoles adorned with cherubs' heads. The round-arched, architraved doorway is complemented by a round-arched, radial fanlight and a raised and fielded panel door. The mid-18th century rear range has a half-hipped tile roof and flush framed sash windows with glazing bars, along with mostly 19th century openings on the ground floor. The early 18th century stables feature a hipped tile roof, timber framing with a brick and cement finish, and three-light mullioned casement windows on the first floor. Inside the main house, there is a mid-18th century staircase with one twisted, one fluted, and one plain baluster for each step, along with two re-set late 18th century chimney pieces.
