Description
Newbury Lock is a lock built in 1796, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features a brick chamber topped with stone coping. The lock has two sets of double wooden gates; the top gates are equipped with mechanical gate paddle gearing, while the bottom gates utilize hydraulic gate paddle gearing. Additionally, the top gates are assisted by lever-operated ground paddle gearing, with a single lever on each side of the chamber. This lock is reputed to be the only one in Southern England that has this type of paddle gear. The Kennet Navigation was established by 1724 and was acquired by the Kennet & Avon Canal Company in 1812, with John Hore serving as the engineer for the Navigation and John Rennie as the engineer for the Canal.
