Description
No 4 on Northcroft Lane is a pair of almshouses built around 1821, established and funded by John Childs for three male members of the Church of England. The building is designed in the Gothick style and consists of two storeys with a double front featuring three windows. It has a hipped tile roof and is constructed from red brick, accented with a dentil eaves cornice. The windows are arched, with two-light casement windows that include Y tracery and hoodmounds. A wide central doorway is topped with a moulded hood, and above the doorway is a blind window that bears a dedicatory inscription: 'This Almshouse was erected and endorsed AD 1821 by Mr John Childs sail-cloth manufacturer of this town for poor men of good moral character, natives and parishoners of Newbury.'
