Description
The Litten is a house located on Church Street in Hampstead Norreys. It dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century, and further changes and extensions occurring around 1850 and in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, featuring brick with vitreous headers on the east and west fronts, and has a hipped old tile roof. It has a double ridge plan with a late 18th-century extension on the southwest that may have originally been a small barn. The house is two storeys high, with a cellar and attic, and has dentilled and moulded brick eaves. There are three chimneys with offset heads, two of which are on the northeast roof slope. The sash windows include glazing bars.
On the southeast front, the house has three bays with a glazed central door set in a doorcase featuring Doric pilasters, fluted necking, an entablature, and a pediment. The ground floor has irregular bays on either side of the door, each topped with hipped tiled roofs. The northeast front also has three bays, with a central ground floor window that has a double scroll-shaped head and painted glass.
Inside, there is a large fireplace in the kitchen, which includes a bread oven on the right and a spice alcove on the left. The interior features queen post trusses, purlins, and some rafters made from old timbers.
