Description
This pair of gate piers, located 204 metres east of the entrance to Home Farm, dates from the early 18th century. They are constructed of brick with stone dressings and stand as tall square structures. Each pier features stone plinth bases and moulded stone plinth caps. At the top, there are stone corniced caps that are adorned with stone vases, which are intricately carved with swags, flowers, and fruit.
The east and west faces of the piers include arched niches above the plinths, which are accented by stone strings at the impost level, stone keys, and stone shells within the arches. Above the niches, there are moulded stone panels. The north and south faces have brick pilasters that were used for hanging gates, walls, or railings, and these are topped with stone moulded cornices and scrolls.
The northern pier is currently attached to a low wall that is not of special interest. These gate piers were originally part of the former Manor House built for the Earl of Craven by Sir Balthazar Gerbier and William Wynne, which was destroyed by fire in 1718.
