Description
Pear Tree Cottage is an 18th-century farmhouse that was re-faced in the 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. It is timber-framed with brick walls and a deep, overhanging thatched roof, featuring brick end chimneystacks. The house has three bays and two storeys.
The exterior is characterised by Flemish bond red brickwork with vitrified headers. The front of the house has a 19th-century square casement window with four octagonal panes under a cambered arch with vitrified headers, a bricked-up former door under a similar arch, and a 20th-century porch with a thatched roof and wany planks to the gable, sheltering a 20th-century door. To the right is a further square window. The south gable shows exposed timber framing, a central brick chimney breast flanked by casement windows (one of which is metal), and a small outshut to the rear, which is a 20th-century addition. The north gable has some exposed framing and a chimney rising from a single-storey addition. The 20th-century extension to the rear on the north side is not considered to be of special interest.
Inside, the ground floor has exposed spine beams with run-out stops and light scantling joists, plank doors, and a box frame partition exposed in the central bay where a timber stair is located. The first floor is plastered below collar level; box frame construction is exposed at the gable ends. Above collar level, the unfinished attic reveals exposed collars and a complete run of pegged rafters with visible lathes and straw.
The building is listed due to its largely intact 18th-century roof structure and timber wall frame, as well as the 19th-century improvements to the brickwork and windows which demonstrate a gentrification.
