Description

This is a 17th-century farmhouse, originally likely of a two-bay, lobby-entrance plan, running along a north/south axis. It was later altered and expanded with the addition of a late 18th-century wing to the southwest. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular arrangement of windows. The roof is tiled, with hipped and half-hipped gables. A prominent brick stack sits centrally, featuring a pair of diagonal brick shafts. The main part of the house is constructed of red brick, while the southwest wing is stuccoed. Windows include segmental-arched sash and casement windows with glazing bars, along with leaded lights to mullioned windows, and a Venetian window in the southwest wing. A doorway is topped with a bracketted hood. Inside, the ground floor features stop-chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops. Historically, this was Falkland Farm, and tradition holds that the body of Lord Falkland was brought here after the First Battle of Newbury in 1643. The building is designated for its group value and historical associations, as documented in Money’s “History of Newbury.”
