Description

Cross House is a medieval structure, likely originally the base of an old boundary cross at Itchenworth. From at least the 16th century, it served as a circular stone shelter with seats for people waiting to be ferried across the Itchen River. It is noted as a weather house in 1577. In 1634, it was repaired, and this date is inscribed along with the initials of Peter Clungeon, who was the Mayor at that time. The building features stone rubble walls with ashlar quoins, rising to about 5 feet, and is shaped like a cross.
