Description
Central Bridge is a railway bridge built between 1881 and 1882, designed by William Jacomb, who was the chief engineer for the London and South Western Railway Company. The bridge features three spans; the central span over the railway lines consists of riveted iron box-girders supported by riveted iron piers that have cross-bracing between them. The side spans are made up of iron beams with brick jack-arches in between, also supported by riveted iron piers. The carriageway is adorned with cast-iron parapet balustrades and cast-iron lamp standards. The abutments are constructed of red brick in a Tudor style, featuring moulded brick strings, three-centred arches, and semi-octagonal brick piers with arched panels and Portland stone dressings. The abutment at the west end separates the north and south sides and includes a flight of steps at the center. Central Bridge carries the road from the Floating Bridge, which was opened in 1836, over the River Itchen.
