Description

Wight House is a bank, built in 1896 by S. Kelway Pope for the Capital Counties Bank. The building is constructed of yellow brick with Bath stone dressings and has a slate mansard roof with stone coping to the gable ends, lead rolls, flats, and a dome. Brick stacks with stone cornices are present at the gable ends.

The plan is rectangular, with a central entrance and stairhall. The design is in the Victorian Italianate style. The north front is symmetrical, with a 2:1:2 bay arrangement. Pilasters are paired and panelled at the ends, and the central projecting bay features panelled pilasters, entablatures above both the ground and first floors, a parapet, and arcading. The ground-floor windows have been replaced, while the cambered arch windows have moulded stone architraves with small keystones and sashes. The central doorway features a shouldered architrave with a keystone and a blind fanlight above. A small, lead-clad dome sits over the central bay, topped with a tented roof lantern and weathervane, flanked by dormers with segmental pediments. Similar dormers are present at the rear, which has a plainer elevation with sash windows and cambered arches.

Inside, doorways have panelled architraves with cornices, and there is a cantilevered staircase with a cast-iron balustrade and a moulded mahogany handrail.
