Description
The main station building, including the booking hall on the downside at Woolston Railway Station, dates from around 1860 and is designed in the Italianate classical style. This building is an example of the mid-Victorian tradition of the London and South Western Railway, influenced by architect John Tite. It is two storeys tall and features a cement-rendered exterior with a hipped slate roof and wide bracket eaves cornice. There is a stringcourse and long and short quoins. The building has six bays, with the two end bays on the right-hand side projecting slightly. The windows are sash style with vertical glazing bars, and the first-floor windows have cambered heads. The ground floor windows are adorned with moulded architraves and keystones. A plinth supports the structure, and there is a wooden canopy over the two central windows and doorcase.
