Description
Jesus Chapel, also known as St Mary Extra, was built in 1620 to serve part of the old Parish of St Mary, Southampton, known as 'St Mary Extra', which is located across the Itchen River. It was the first church in Southampton to be consecrated after the Reformation. The building is constructed of rubble, and the only remaining part of the original structure is the central west gable, which features diagonal buttresses, a dressed coping topped with a small gabled bell turret, a rectangular opening, and one bell. On the south return wall of the gable, there is an early 17th-century stone mullioned window with a rectangular head and pointed arched lights.
In 1822, a west porch and south transept were added in ashlar by E. Burrough and J. Ede, and the windows were updated to flat-headed Neo-Tudor style. A north aisle was added in 1846, followed by an east aisle in 1866, and a new chancel and south chapel in 1883. The interior of the church is plain and retains its early 19th-century plain panelled oak pews, along with early 19th-century wall monuments.
