Description
The Medieval Merchant's House, located at No. 58 French Street, is a late 13th or early 14th century building, likely originally used as a merchant's house with a shop. It features two storeys constructed of stone rubble and has a vaulted undercroft. The roof is modern and tiled. The building is divided into six bays, with the two central bays forming an open hall and the remaining bays consisting of two-storey chamber blocks. The stump of the crown post is still present. The ceiling of the western lower chamber retains corbels bearing merchants' marks and a moulded central beam. The interior is galleried. This structure is noted as the earliest complete medieval house still standing in England and is scheduled as an ancient monument.
