Description

The vaults under Nos 46 and 48 French Street date from the late 13th century and 15th century. There are two tunnel vaults located in a semi-basement. The northern vault is rubble faced and may date from the late 13th century or early 14th century. The southern vault is ashlar faced and likely from the 15th century. Both vaults have doorways at the west end featuring depressed two-centred openings, along with blocked spiral staircases. The modern buildings above the vaults are not of special architectural interest. These vaults are scheduled as an ancient monument.
